History of The Old Vicarage – Isleham

In 1468, the rectory homestead occupied 1 acre, including ¼ acre, called the parsonage yard, where the tithe barn stood. By 1666 The vicarage house had 7 hearths and it was presumably rebuilt after a fire in 1687.

In 1830 the vicarage was considered 'very comfortable' by a recently appointed vicar. It was refurbished circa 1850 and the new double-pile, three-storeyed house had three bays including a central doorway in a round-headed recess in its main west front.

By the 1890s it had eight bedrooms and was considered over-large and expensive to inhabit, but it remained the vicar's residence, being enlarged and improved again around 1900.

The vicarage continued to be occupied by the vicar until 1976. The vicarage was sold into private ownership in 1982 and has since been known as The Old Vicarage.
